"man adduser.conf" gets a warning from man,

	/tmp/zmanh3ULIe:112: bad argument name `.'

On that line, I think the "\" in 

	^[a-z][-a-z0-9]*\$.

is not wanted.  (\$ is troff for a macro argument, or something.)
Perhaps this \ is a leftover cut and paste from the perl sources.
