That's not true. Double brackets still need quotes:

$ y="a\ bc"
$ [[ $y == $x* ]] && echo "[$x] is prefix of [$y]"
$ [[ "$y" == "$x"* ]] && echo "[$x] is prefix of [$y]"
[a\ b] is prefix of [a\ bc]
