Yes, I had a "%watches = ()" line in /etc/sbuild.conf, but after a purge and
a reinstall, the entire file disappeared (a leftover from a previous sbuild
version, I suppose) and there was no traces of anything similar anywhere else.

Then I tried again and the $check_watches variable still worked as expected.
