Your environment is invalid.  Type

  locale

at a shell prompt, and have a look at the settings.  The locale for
one or more of these settings does not exist.  You might want to run

  dpkg-reconfigure locales

and add the missing locale(s).

That notwithstanding, this has been fixed in the current SVN so that
it will fall back on the "C" locale in the event that the user has
misconfigured locales and/or environment.  This will be in the next
upload in a week or so.
