I'm sure I (am|was back then) using the released package, and *not*
packages from the buildd branch. That was for an incremental d-i
build, not for stuff on buildds; hence my using unstable's packages.

I guess we'll see how it goes after the recent modification you made
for the recent aptitude configuration option change. Thanks for the
clarification about master vs. buildd branches anyway.
