I think this bug is a duplicate of https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=745851

And yes a useful message would be a major improvement. I'm nmt sure if
a fix for that has made it into the current exerimental version.

Your workaround for now is to specify a specific distro with -d, and/or chroot with -c
