I worked weeks on finding a solution that would work well for squeeze and at
the same time not break chroots with the introduction of gpg2 *and* together
with the fact that apt stopped depending on gnupg. So yes, this change was very
deliberate as I otherwise would not've spent that much time on doing it in a
way that makes everybody happy.

That's why I try to find out: what about the solution does not make you happy?
Which use case of yours is broken?

Simplification is good but why would I stop supporting older setups if there is
a solution that lets it keep working? Why would I *actively* remove support for
a feature?
