Exactly my opinion as well. 

To have a successful newbie list, one needs to have experts in
abundance. In my mind it will be difficult to convince these experts to
leave an e-mail list already working well enough, and use a web based
forum. 

Won't happen IMO, and all one will do is end up splintering the help
available even more, (that ought to confuse the newbie, which isn't what
we want to achieve, obviously).

So the status quo is working just great methinks.
