I'm not so sure about this. When burnfree activates, you get a
CD which is of lower quality. For archival, it would be better to
have the burn fail so that you can try again. The lower quality
CD would be less resistant to age-related bit rot.

Thus the current behavior has some serious advantages.

The "do not muck with it" option is also legit and sensible,
even if the drive setting is random. Why risk poking at
drive settings unless required?

Plain CDR_DRIVEROPTS makes more sense.
The prepend/append issue is an implementation detail.
