Out of curiosity and with no insight into wodim's
ways with drive capability detection:
Where is /dev/cdrw pointing at ?
  ls -l /dev/cdrw

Do you get any device addresses listed by
  wodim --devices
  wodim -scanbus
  wodim dev=ATA -scanbus
