Looks much as if the DVD-RW media were
A sequential DVD-RW should be in closed state
after that growisofs run and thus should refuse
on the next write attempt.

DVD+RW are very different from DVD-RW.
The Blank operation does not apply to them.
Formatting can be done by the burn program during
the normal write operation.
growisofs will do what's necessary if you just
throw in a DVD+RW media - new or used.
It is supposed to behave as you report above:
with -Z it writes the media from scratch.

No sacrifice needed.
I just want to know whether they are already
formatted. The media can then be returned to
its owner in original state:
will either say:
Mounted Media: 14h, DVD-RW Sequential
Mounted Media: 13h, DVD-RW Restricted Overwrite
It should not say:
State of Last Session: reserved/damaged
as it did with your problematic media.
