Similair problem here:

HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H53L 2.01

DVD burning is works as excepted, but the drive is unable to burn
CDs. The error message says no disc in the drive, tried various brands
of -R and -RW discs, using cdrskin, cdrecord and wodim. Possible the
problem is drive related.

(Sometimes, after 8-10 eject/load tries it found the disc in the
drive, then cd burning works too)
