I just want to say that I have a dvd drive from the same vendor HL-DT-ST and I experience the same problem , burning fails with very similar error. This is an LG drive and googling the issue the problem seems to be wide spread. I have come to the conclusion that these drives received an firmware update for win7 compatibility but it made them useless in linux. In my case the drive also works in windows but not in linux, swapping the drive to a sony and voila i can burn in linux. I believe it has something to to with burnfree and dma access? I can burn DVDs but only at "0.3x" so it takes a bit longer than forever :) but cd's fail.<br>

If drive and media are ok, then the reason must<br>
be in the Linux environment. I am quite sure<br>
that the kernel is not to blame.<br>

Make a test in Linux single-user mode.<br>
Either by booting your system to that mode<br>
or by downloading, burning and booting<br>
RIP Linux, a small rescue system.<br>
It contains quite fresh burn programs:<br>

mount /dev/sda2 /mnt<br>
cdrecord -v dev=/dev/sr0 -dao /mnt/base/iso/grml_2009.10.iso<br>

If this works, then you have to hunt down<br>
the process which spoils your burns in normal<br>
multi-user mode.<br>
If it does not work in single user mode either<br>
then i am clueless again.<br>
