Recent versions of the Xorg xserver use xrandr for multiple-screen
support. When you have your external display plugged in, do
$ xrandr --output VGA --right-of LVDS
(or use "--left-of", "--above", or "--below" -- see "man xrandr")
You can make this permanent in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf by using
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "LVDS"
Option "LeftOf" "VGA"
EndSection
(see "man xorg.conf")
