Hi Michael,

See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=482273 which I 
filed last year; no feedback so far.

I don't think there's a "right way" to fix this, but there are various 
obvious hacks as others have pointed out.  I suggest that you hack 
/etc/init.d/mountall.sh so that it waits for the device to be present.  
A fixed sleep is OK if you're not bothered about boot speed.
