For what it's worth, on my unstable Debian system, Mozilla Firefox has
these problems with devanagari, while OpenOffice.org and GEdit, for
example, do not. I suspect the problem lies with Mozilla; do you know
if Ubuntu's Mozilla is built with the --enable-pango option (Debian's
Firefox isn't)? If not, then that would probably explain it.
