Btw, I rebuilt the debian mozilla-firefox package with --enable-pango

You can install it by adding

deb http://debian-in.alioth.debian.org/sid ./
deb-src http://debian-in.alioth.debian.org/sid ./

to your /etc/apt/sources.list and then doing:

aptitude update
aptitude install mozilla-firefox

Enabling pango was the only change.  This package is for unstable, Kartik 
is working on building it for stable.  (Should work on Ubuntu too I think)

I would like readers to test it and see if it solves the rendering 
problem.
