Dear Hector,

thank you for your report. I think that it is a duplicate of #549427.

If you or somebody else is tempted to make samtools more portable, I strongly
recommend to do this work together with Upstream. That it was never built on
armel and sparc means that it was never used nor tested in depth on these
architectures, so even if we solved the bug that was caught by the test suite,
it does not mean that the freshly buildable package would be fit for end users.
