Could you perhaps compare the environment variables set in each of those

Please try if the problem persist using only Lenny + the following:
deb http://debian.jones.dk/ lenny sugar
(and if possible, please do not simply reinstall the sugar package but
reinstall the system - unless you are absolutely sure that that package
is the only one "contaminating" from Sid!)
