I just filled a bug report for this, but the package is still owned by Wen Heping, so I do not know if it will respond.
Can you look at python-numexpr and evaluate the amount of work needed to provide a -dbg package to the current numexpr package.

I just played with -dbg for one of my package and even the build failled without a depending -dbg package.
Is it the case with pytables ?
