Package: gnuplot-x11

Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

running the following in some X terminal:

        unset DISPLAY
echo 'plot sin(x); exit' | gnuplot -persist

this was triggered by the http://stackoverflow.com/a/16130236/841108 answer

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

        Type the two commands:

           unset DISPLAY
echo 'plot sin(x); exit' | gnuplot -persist

in some X11 terminal under XFCE or Gnome session

   * What was the outcome of this action?

A core dump with SIGSEGV from gnuplot

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

At least a fatal error message, and preferably a recoverable error message.
