Hrm, ok.

There hasn't been much progress, it seems that binary compatibility has
indeed been broken, so we will have to bump the soname to 2 after all.

However, there is the issue with the format plugins which currently
reside in /usr/lib/openbabel, and as apparently the plugin-ABI has
changed between 2.0 and 2.1 as well, 2.0 plugins won't work with the 2.1
library and vice-versa, so some versioned directory is probably needed.

I brought this up on the openbabel list but haven't received a reply or
so far, I'll try again now.
