IRC has a special part named DCC - direct client-to-client - for
one-to-one stuff.
Oh, and my irc application also has windows for one-to-one talks with
the "pure" IRC protocol.
My "IM" client, gaim, has IRC support, too.
And both MSN and Jabber (at least) have group conversations. You can
even blog using jabber...

You already gave the counterexample - nickserv. And it's not a bug,
it's a feature. ;-)

They have something more useful: channels. What would be a buddy group
for me is now a channel. I see who is online, but I don't even have to
add them one-by-one...

MSN and Jabber do.

Oh, btw:
- ICQ supports offline messages, just like email. MSN doesn't. IRC
only with MsgServ.
So maybe IRC and MSN have more in common, just as ICQ and email?
