How about servalproject.org ? It has tested a wi-fi mesh network at a remote
aboriginal community using android phones.

One good thing about dictators' switching off mobile phone networks is at
least it stops android phones' potential to sell out activists!  A
distinction from Iphone's  seeming to actually compromise pro-democracy
people in Iran!

If a user controlled mesh network can stay up at least in crowded protest
areas, progressive activists have a good chance of bringing repression to an
end in their neck of the woods. :)
