Another contender that can be purchased today for $40-50 are generic
thin clients such as this:

They sport 533-800mhz ARM SoC's, 64-128mb ram and a matching amount of
flash memory - I've ordered several and their claims of 2gb flash
internal memory never pan out. Moreover they feature a host of ports
that many of the plug computers don't and come from what seems to be a
range of distributors and producers.

They come preloaded with Windows CE, but there has be quite a bit of
progress at getting Linux onto them (see
