I mean I make my wifi open and available to myself, guests and people
visiting nearby.  I do to others what I hope they will do to me, when
I need wifi somewhere else. :)

Well, I use Linux on all my machines, and mostly use encrypted ssh
connections.

Does this mean that anyone knowing the protocol of the smart meter can
track your power consumption and use it to discover when you are at
home?

I do not do it to help people optain privacy, I do it because it is
hassle free and make sure I can help my fellow citizens without
requiring them to ask for permissions to get help.  :)
