Assuming you can put the thing in some sort of DMZ and use it as your
gateway, it should still be able to work downstream from your ISP's
router. Other configurations are possible with some skills and
knowledge, but the base assumption is a user without those skills.

The project as currently conceived has a specified hardware target.
It's quite possible those hardware specs will change, but right now
my assumptions as to harware are really just the assumptions of the
people who originally specified the plug.

If you want to configure your Freedom Plug with a 3G dongle, go ahead,
but that's probably going to be an advanced configuration used by a tiny
percentage of people. And if you're in that percentage and have the
knowledge to make it work, my guess is you can twiddle the bits under
the hood to make it right. At any rate, it's probably unrealistic to
base major architectural decisions on the smallest number of users.

Freedom Plugs could be smart enough to DTRT when daisy-chained. In
fact, putting two together might make the pair a viable mesh networking
device. I guess we'd have to call that the Voltron configuration.

At any rate, these are just my thoughts. I'm not speaking
authoritatively on the project here. Sometime soon, a winnowing of
ideas will occur and much code and design will be left on the floor.
Until then, I'm enjoying watching visions and rationales multiply and
crossbreed into short-lived mutant horrors.

Around the office, we're doing a lot of work to get this project off the
ground. We're building infrastructure, identifying financial resources,
searching for the right leader, etc. Brainstorming the architecture is
part of that work, and at some point when we have a tech lead, we hand
the notes to that person and get out of the way.
