Thanks.  The patch looks plausible from a quick scan, but as you say
this needs careful review.

I'd prefer to get the current changes in experimental into unstable before
trying to merge anything potentially disruptive like this.  People have been
clamouring for the package to be updated to a newer upstream release for some
time (though sadly none of that has translated into feedback on the
experimental upload yet).
