i agree with you that this behaviour is a problem,
but the bug isn't that grave that it would require an update for woody.
rather than changing the symlinky by hand you could try an:
"dpkg-reconfigure logcheck-database"
current logcheck no longer uses those symlinks. debconf implementation was
quite b0rked back then but can't be fixed for woody, sorry.

bug will stay unfortunately until sarge is released.
