[Logcheck-devel] Bug#365565: logcheck: improve description of FQDN option

Package: logcheck
Version: 1.2.43a
Severity: wishlist

The conf file currently says
# Should the hostname of the generated mails be fully qualified?
FQDN=1

I suggest rewording that to
# Should the hostname in the subject of the generated mails be fully qualified?
FQDN=1

The current wording led me to believe that the sender, and perhaps
recipient (if otherwise unqualified) of the emails generated by
logcheck would be fully qualified. This is not the case, and from
inspecting the code this setting seems to affect only the text of
subject lines and some debug lines.

Probably the usage note
 -H HOST = use this hostname for the mail
should be
 -H HOST = use this hostname in the mail's subject line
with similar change to the man page.

An alternate approach would be to change the actual behavior, which
currently is provided by the "mail" program for the sender and
recipient addresses. I think mail uses the contents of /etc/mailname
(or at least exim will). My /etc/mailname does not have the hostname
--short in it. Since the recipient domain can be set explicitly, and
since the sender domain can be inferred from the subject line, there
seems little value in changing the actual behavior. The wisdom of
overriding the standard domain handling is also debatable in this
context.
