So the problems seems to be in running this:

/usr/sbin/logtail2 -f /var/log/auth.log -o /var/lib/logcheck/offset.var.log.auth.log

Does logtail2 exist?
Is /var/lib/logcheck writable by the logcheck user?
Can you otherwise find why *this* command doesn't work?

It *might* be useful to strace, but it's perl so it's also likely to
be ugly.
