I agree that the proposed changes should be produced as a series of
patches in a separate branch. That branch then should be fully reviewed
and tested by several developers prior to being merged. I would be happy
to help review and test said patches, once they seem fairly complete.

I also agree that a new release is due ASAP, so this work should be
planned for a future release. An entry in a BUGS file seems most apropos.
