Initial Comment:
Reported in Launchpad as https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/minicom/+bug/232413

"My appliances send some garbage (wrong port speed or whatever) during one phase of bootup, which causes minicom to crash with the following error message:

minicom: ../iconv/loop.c:430: internal_utf8_loop_single: Assertion `inptr - bytebuf > (state->__count & 7)’ failed.

My locale is de_DE.UTF-8 and I work around this crash by running minicom as "LANG=C minicom".
"

I've seen this myself with minicom version 2.3-rc1 (compiled Dec 10 2007) as included in Ubuntu 8.04 (using LANG=en_US.UTF-8)
