status update: design document updated, video recorded, debconf ends

Dear colleagues,

As DebConf7 is drawing towards its end, I have decided to invest
some time into updating the design document:

It should now pretty much correspond to the code presentation I did
yesterday, which has been recorded on video and which shall be made
available soon here:

The new design document somewhat invalidates the design graph
I prepared for my talk:

which does not include event handlers, nor the fact that they are
more or less the most important components of netconf and should be
at the centre, that they can also be event sources, and that they
are really the ones talking to configuration sources and policy.

I am running out of time now and have been unable to let go of the
current image, so I failed to create an updated version. Maybe one
of you out there can turn the design document into a graphical
respresentation of the daemon's components?

This concludes the very first phase of netconf development. It can
configure interfaces statically and via DHCP, but it ignores most
parameters, including the default gateway for now, though those
things are trivial to implement. I just ran out of time and need
a break. Hopefully the code is clena enough now and the
documentation enough for others to jump on. Unless things go really
wrong, I'll try to work on a roadmap document tonight in which
I would like to formalise our path to version 1.0 and limit the
set of features netconf 1.0 will include. In short, I think I can
sum it up as ifupdown+ifplugd.
