Hi!

Sorry for continuously failing to get back to it. 

Unfortunately, nowadays I build everything from source in virtualenvs,
since the stuff that is provided by the cluster distros is so hopelessly
outdated. Besides, the MPI part of my project has to wait, since I am
still struggling with the serial part...

I am not a specialist in the subject matter, but some people just prefer
one to another and that's it. Other than that, mpich2 has advanced
Windows support, which is still in beta for OpenMPI, this could be
another reason why people are generally inclined to use mpich2 instead.

You'd better ask Lisandro about this :-)
