yup, i did launch it as root.  i tried checking out the the development 
branch this evening but i was getting an authorization error (from what 
i've found this might have to do with the server):

but, on a different note, i had already checked out the 2.1 tree a week or 
so ago.  so i rebuilt it and re-ran it with a good outcome:

the good part is that now newhidups is talking to the ups on my machine! 
(and there was much rejoicing)

as you've mentioned, tripplite doesn't expose much data.  but, i'm hoping 
that the above might be a step in the right direction so we can get these 
working, even if it is a very, very, very basic level.  <g>  let me know 
how i can help or what i need to do to make this possible.
