okay, I'm ashamed ... using -DDDDD* switch with upsmon, I read that ... 
upsmon at localhost was an unknown ups ...

damn, in the MONITOR line, I used `user`@localhost instead of 
`ups`@localhost ...

sorry for the noise, all seems to work fine...
