Sometimes the wiring fault indicator circuitry gets confused if the
UPS suddenly loses its ground connection. (If the power were to fail
due to a tripped circuit breaker, you would still have a connection to
ground.)

Another possibility is that you actually have a wiring fault, but it
is not detected until you pull the plug. If you have a multimeter, you
can check to make sure there is no AC voltage between neutral and
ground. If so, or if you don't like the idea of poking metal into a
live outlet (with 220V and a potential wiring fault, I'd hesitate...
120V is slightly more forgiving), you might want to check with an
electrician.
