Possibly, or maybe it is an even weirder cable than those. Note that
for contact closure UPSes, output lines from the PC could be required
to see proper input signal transitions.

If you can afford the downtime, you could poke around inside and trace
the lines from the serial connector back to the circuitry.

All merely suggestions, of course - don't blame me if you get zapped :-)
