Prolific PL-2303 based USB to RS-232 adapters will probably cause the  
least hassle. I have a couple of them from various brands and they all  
work flawlessly. I've seen mixed results with Cypress Semiconductor  
(another popular one) which seem to be working fine for some people  
and not at all for others. YMMV.
