I sent a patch for this to parted-devel yesterday (linked from the trac
ticket above). Jim Meyering seemed to generally agree with my analysis,
confirmed that my patch worked, and said "I'll probably push your patch
tomorrow".

I've just uploaded this change to Ubuntu intrepid, and have attached the
dpatch you need to this mail (it required a bit of backporting work to
work properly with 1.7.1).
