 I think this bug is still present, unfortunately I couldn't reproduce
 it.  I grabbed xchat-gnome 1:0.15-0ubuntu2 which has the following
 change:
  * fixed a tab vs whitespace typo in debian/control to please pbuilder
 but the control file still has an embedded tab at the exact same place
 you mentionned.  The package builds for me.

 Could you please hand me the original control file of ubuntu1 if you
 have it?
