Update: this was discussed in the thread starting at
 https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2015/04/msg00258.html
and most of my concerns about static linking were debunked,
so I intend to go ahead with this.

I'll probably run it once through experimental to make sure
it builds everywhere, but I don't expect any problems.
