I did this now and pushed to the 'ntyni/inc-version-list'
branch of the Debian perl git repository.

A test build fixes the polymake issue and doesn't seem to break anything
major.
I'm inclined to reassign this bug to perl and close it with the above
change unless I hear arguments to the contrary.
