 Ah right, forgot to update this bug; the culprit is initramfs which
 exports tons of stuff:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/291619

 I wasn't seeing this bug because I'm using upstart.

 Cool, we'll apply this workaround then while we wait for either of
 initramfs or modprobe to be fixed.
