I have submitted your request as a wish against alsa-base so that it
doesn't get forgotten.  Thanks again.  I didn't include your patch
because it doesn't apply to the initscript in CVS and:

* data should be saved in /var/lib/alsa, not in /etc;
* saving and restoring of these settings should be done in the same
  way as the mixer settings are saved and restored.  For modular drivers
  this means that it should be done by the module loader.  For integral
  drivers I guess it has to be done in the initscript but I wonder 
  whether this is the best way.
