Rhythmbox does not play mp3 normally with alsa, the sound skips. It
uses about 20% of CPU, when playing and if you do something intensive
you can't listen to music at all. This does not happen with Totem, Beep
Media player and alsaplayer. And it does not happen with Rhythmbox when
oss drivers are used. Changing audiosink from osssink to alsasink and
vice versa does not have any effect.

I have VIA KT133 motheboard with AC97 on-board sound. dpkg -l | grep
alsa on my system produces result:

ii alsa-base 1.0.4-3 ALSA sound driver common files
ii alsa-headers 1.0.4-3 ALSA sound driver header files
ii alsa-modules-2.4.25.0404 1.0.3-1+1.0 Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (drivers)
ii alsa-oss 1.0.4-1 Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (OSS compatibility library)
ii alsa-source 1.0.4-3 ALSA sound driver source
ii alsa-utils 1.0.4-1 Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (utilities)
ii alsaplayer 0.99.76-0.1 PCM player designed for ALSA
ii alsaplayer-common 0.99.76-0.1 PCM player designed for ALSA (common files)
ii alsaplayer-gtk 0.99.76-0.1 PCM player designed for ALSA (GTK version)
ii alsaplayer-oss 0.99.76-0.1 PCM player designed for ALSA (OSS output module)
ii gnome-alsamixer 0.9.6-1 ALSA sound mixer for GNOME
ii gstreamer-alsa 0.6.4-4 ALSA plugin for GStreamer

On-board soun according to lspci:
0000:00:07.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)

Module snd-via82xx is used with alsa, and module via82cxxx_audio with oss.

The problem of sound skipping is probably due to large latencies in the
kernel block and disk layer. You will probably encounter fewer problems
if you upgrade to Linux 2.6. Even then, there is no guarantee that
music will not skip if you load the machine.
