In include/alsa-symbols.h, the following in-line assembly is used when
not building PIC code:

#define use_default_symbol_version(real, name, version) \
        __asm__ (".weak " #name); \
        __asm__ (".set " #name "," #real)
#endif

The resulting assembly code that gcc chokes on looks like:

        .set snd_ctl_elem_info_get_dimensions,__snd_ctl_elem_info_get_dimen=
sions

I have no idea what this is expected to look like in alpha assembly.
