Package: alsa-base
Version: 0.9.6-5
Severity: normal

The following shows that I will not be getting the already available
alsa-modules that match the kernel version that I will be getting on
my next apt-get dist-upgrade.

# apt-get dist-upgrade --print-uris -qqyy|egrep kern\|alsa|awk '{print $2}'
alsa-source_0.9.6-5_all.deb
kernel-image-2.4.22-1-k7_2.4.22-1_i386.deb
kernel-image-2.4-k7_2.4.22-1_i386.deb
kernel-package_8.061_all.deb
libasound2_0.9.6-3_i386.deb
$ COLUMNS=333 dlocate -l alsa|awk '/alsa-modules-2.4.2.*-k7/{print $1,$2}'
pn alsa-modules-2.4.20-1-k7
pn alsa-modules-2.4.20-1-k7-smp
ii alsa-modules-2.4.20-3-k7
pn alsa-modules-2.4.20-3-k7-smp
un alsa-modules-2.4.22-1-k7
un alsa-modules-2.4.22-1-k7-smp
$ COLUMNS=333 dlocate -l alsa|awk '/^ii/{print $2}'

alsa-headers
alsa-modules-2.4.20-3-k7

alsaplayer
alsaplayer-alsa
alsaplayer-common
alsaplayer-esd
alsaplayer-gtk
alsaplayer-jack
alsaplayer-nas
alsaplayer-oss
alsaplayer-text

apparently, one must install alsa-modules-2.4.22-1-k7 by hand

one might expect the alsa-modules meta package would track the latest
version or something, but that is 'obsolete'

BTW, in /etc/init.d/alsa change
    echo "Starting ALSA (unknown version): failed - ALSA modules not installed"
to approximately
    echo "Starting ALSA: failed - alsa-modules-{this kernel version} not installed"

P.S. will alsa-modules-2.4.22-1-k7 work with

Closes: 213061 284138 284181
Changes:
 alsa-modules-i386 (1.0.8+2) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Thomas Hood:
     - Recompile against alsa-source 1.0.8-2.
     - Build-Depend on alsa-source 1.0.8-2 with ">=" rather than "="
       so that this package doesn't become FTBFS just because we
       make a new alsa-driver release. Accordingly, drop the
       alsa-source Debian version from our numbering scheme.
 .
 alsa-modules-i386 (1.0.8+1+1) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   * Thomas Hood:
     - debian/README.Debian
       + Add for metapackages
     - debian/control:
       + We now generate it from control.prem4 using the little
         debian/m4-control script
     - debian/control.prem4:
       + Don't Build-Depend on kernel-package which we don't use
       + It's a "Pentium 4" not a "Pentium IV"  (Closes: #284138)
     - debian/rules
       + Make use of new KDEP variable to add Dependency on
         kernel-image-KVERS to binary packages
   * Jordi Mallach:
     - Recompile against alsa-source 1.0.8-1, kernel 2.4.27-2
       (Closes: #284181)
     - New alsa-source package eliminates lintian warning
       usr-doc-symlink-to-foreign-package
     - debian/control, rules:
       + Add alsa-modules-2.4 metapackages to ease upgrades of
         alsa-modules packages when kernel changes (Closes: #213061)
