Perhaps this is old news to you.  If so, please ignore
it.

ALSA fails on my sarge stable system, kernel 2.6.8, when
the ALSA units are monolithically compiled into the
kernel.  Monolithic ALSA takes input normally and seems
to think that it is making sound, but in fact it makes
none.  I have no idea why.  ALSA seems to sing happily
when compiled as a family of modules.  I am pleased with
ALSA compiled as modules---this workaround is fine with
me---but in case you didn't know yet, I thought that I
should at least mention the trouble.

I have a typical Intel 8xx motherboard and use the
intel8x0 driver.  If further details on my case are
wanted, see [1] and [2], or contact me.  I am not
subscribed to this list.
